Accidents/Sports Injuries/Fractures: Back pain may be caused by injuries that often result from accidents and falls (automobile accident, slip and fall, work accident, whiplash). Up to twenty percent of all injuries that occur in sports involve an injury to the back, neck or tailbone. For example, repetitive impact sports (running, biking, golfing) and/or sports that involve twisting or lifting heavy objects can cause tears in the ligaments that support the spine (often lower back)–called a strain or sprain. In contact sports (like football or rugby), trauma can cause spinal injuries in the form of herniated discs, cervical injury (neck injury) and fractured vertebrae. Most cases of fractured vertebrae, however, are the result of osteoporosis, a condition that causes the bones to become weak and porous.
