Park Meadows Imaging features open MRI. Open MRI has become the best option for those patients who are claustrophobic or, for health related reasons, are not able to receive this type of diagnostic test. The difference between an open MRI and a traditional MRI is primarily configuration.

Traditional MRI systems are usually noisy. During the exam, patients may feel claustrophobic because they must lie still inside an enclosed tube in a traditional MRI. The basic technology of an open MRI is similar to that of a traditional MRI. The major difference for the patient is that, instead of lying in a narrow, tube-shaped structure, the patient lies on a cushioned imaging table with more space around the body. Just above the patient is a large, round mechanism from which electromagnetic waves are transmitted. Like the traditional MRI, an open MRI is also painless and does not use ionizing radiation. Pre-testing preparation is the same for both MRI scans. Physician recommendation is necessary for some open MRI procedures.

Patient Safety and Comfort

The MRI technologist will assist you with proper positioning for the MRI scan because you must remain motionless for extended periods of time. If you have difficulty remaining in one position for an extended period of time, please discuss options for physical comfort directly with your treating physician. Depending on the type of MRI equipment and the type of scan you are having performed, part or all of your body may be positioned inside the scanner. If you have difficulty with closed or confined spaces, please discuss your concerns with your doctor.

During your MRI, you will hear sounds similar to a loud bang or a loud knock. You will be provided with earplugs or headphones to help minimize this noise. You will be able to talk to the technologist throughout the exam, and every effort will be made to assure your comfort and safety.

Indications and Contraindications for MRI studies

You cannot have a MRI scan if you have any of the following:

• A pacemaker
• Aneurysm clips in the brain
• Inner ear Implants
• Metal fragments in eyes
• Implanted spinal cord stimulator

There are other conditions which may contraindicate having an MRI performed, such as pregnancy and/or the presence of other types of metal in your body. Make sure that you inform your physician immediately if any of the above conditions are present or if you have any other questions or concerns.

The Use of Contrast during MRI

Certain types of MRI scans require the use of a contrast agent. The contrast is administered intravenously (through an IV). Please inform your physician and the MRI staff if you have ever had an adverse reaction to any contrast media.

Information to Help You Prepare for Your MRI

• Please wear comfortable, loose clothing. Any items with zippers and/or metal buttons or decorations will have to be removed.
• Remove all other metal objects, such as glasses, non-permanent dentures, hearing aids, watches, jewelry, keys, etc. Credit cards, ATM cards, parking cards, etc. should be left at home as these will be demagnetized by powerful MRI magnets.
• You may eat and drink normally before and after your scan. However, please remember that your MRI scan will take anywhere from 20-45 minutes for each area.
• Take all routine medications as prescribed unless otherwise directed by your physician.
• If you are prescribed anti-anxiety drugs or pain medications to take prior to and/or during your MRI scan, you must have someone present to drive you home after your scan.
• If a friend or family member will be attending with you, they will not be permitted in the room during your scan. Small children may be accompanied by a parent if needed.
• Your MRI exam is really quite simple. With the assistance of an MRI technologist, you will be positioned on a padded table. Because it is essential that you remain as still as possible, you may be secured with soft Velcro straps.
• The padded table will move smoothly into the magnet opening and your exam will begin. During your MRI exam, you won't feel anything. The only thing you'll notice is a knocking or banging sound that occurs as the images are being taken. You should be provided with earplugs to wear during the scan, or an MRI compatible audio headset may be available to minimize the noise. The length of your exam is dependent on the type of study being done. Many MRI exams are completed in about half an hour.
• An intercom and mirror arrangement in the system allows the MRI staff to see and hear you throughout the exam. If you become uncomfortable at any point, just say so. The staff will be right there to assist you.
• Once the exam is completed, your technologist will bring you back to the preparation room to collect your belongings. And that's all there is to it!
