Spondylosis Overview:
Spondylosis is a term that many health care providers use to describe the degenerative changes in the spine that result in the loss of normal spinal structure and function. For example, here are some of the various descriptions that spondylosis may be used for:
- Most commonly, spinal arthritis
- The water loss and degeneration that occurs in a spinal disc which may lead to a herniated disc
- The formation of bone spurs in the facet joints or near the intervertebral discs
- The weakening of the ligaments that connect the outside surfaces of the vertebrae

Spondylosis symptoms may include:
- Cervical (neck area) spondylosis:
- Neck, shoulder and/or arm pain
- Loss of fine motor skills
- Weakness, tingling or numbness in the arms
- Thoracic (mid-upper back area) spondylosis:
- Pain in the chest or upper abdomen
- Tingling, numbness, weakness or pain in the legs and/or arms
- Lumbar (lower back area) spondylosis:
- Pain in the back, buttocks and/or legs
- Numbness, muscle weakness or tingling in the legs
- Prolonged standing or sitting may worsen the pain
- Twisting, lifting or straining may cause pain to worsen
- Cervical (neck area) spondylosis:
Treatment
Treatment options for spondylosis may include:

- Injections
- Lumbar support
- Surgery (last option)
A combination of these treatments will usually work to alleviate the pain.
